THE HAT BY JAN BRETT
Jan Brett's The Hat is a yearly read aloud and book study I've always done in Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade. The story teaches so many lessons, is humorous, has a winter theme, and is written by a fantastic author! Check out some of the literacy learning activities and crafts we do with The Hat!
THE HAT BOOK ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
THE HAT CHARACTER ANALYSIS
The Hat is actually a stocking that has come off of the clothesline and gets stuck on Hedgie's head in his prickles. Here students think about what Hedgie sees, thinks, feels, and does about his problem!
THE HAT TEXT TO SELF CONNECTIONS
Using the book The Hat, consider the main character Hedgie, and share how they would respond to Hedgie's predicaments in the story.
THE HAT VOCABULARY WORD CARDS
Students become familiar with words as they appear in the story The Hat using these vocabulary word cards.
CAUSE AND EFFECT
This activity shows students' ability to correlate how actions taken by the story's characters cause reactions in the story.
WRITE A LETTER
Students pretend they are Hedgie and write a letter to the animals in the story, who are giving him a difficult time.
THE HAT COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS
Assess students' reading comprehension of the story by having them mark the statements true or false.
THE HAT CLASS BOOK TEMPLATE
This companion pack includes template pages that can be used for a class book! Add it to your classroom library, and it is sure to be a student favorite!
THE HAT CRAFT
This craftivity fosters discussion about the book, allows students to retell the story or write about their favorite part. Perfect for a bulletin board, students love to see their work on display, to showcase their learning!
