PIGEON BOOK ACTIVITIES FOR ANY BOOK IN THE SERIES!
Do your students love the Pigeon books by Mo Willems? I love this book series because it is always a hit in the classroom. Mo Willems' series of Pigeon books were always a part of my classroom library, when teaching Kindergarten, First Grade, and even Second Grade. Students LOVE Pigeon, who has such strong character traits that make kids laugh out loud!
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! won Mo Willems a Caldecott award, and The Pigeon Needs a Bath has won Best Picture Book by Goodreads for that year.
PIGEON ACTIVITIES AND TEACHING IDEAS
Using read alouds is the perfect way to teach reading concepts. Students enjoy a good story while working on engaging learning activities. Listening to books is a central component of literacy development, which contributes to students' literacy success. This unit offers opportunities for students to dig deeper into the story as they practice many literacy skills.
This unit goes with ANY Pigeon book in the series! This companion contains literacy learning activities that your students will love. Teachers can use it during guided reading to have students work on learning story elements, making predictions, character traits, setting, and character development.
In the Pigeon books, Pigeon always shares a strong opinion. He really wants something, or really does not want to do something. Students LOVE to share their own opinions about things too (and they are fun to hear :)
Pigeon also always has very strong feelings in the stories. In this activity, students use text clues to discover what Pigeon sees, feels, thinks, and does.
Students show reading comprehension skills as they relay key events in the story. On this worksheet, students can draw and label things that have happened in the story.
Things do not tend to go smoothly for Pigeon, so in this activity students can share their advice for Pigeon to help him out. (Not that Pigeon would listen...)
Students will reflect on the story and jot down their personal Story Notes, including any questions they have, things they laughed about, things that surprised them, and their favorite part of the story.
The activities in this Pigeon unit meet ELA Learning Standards for Common Core, VA SOL, and TEKS. A handy checklist of all the literacy learning standards that are met using this pack is included in the resource!
MO WILLEMS PIGEON CRAFT
The unit includes a Pigeon craft! This Pigeon craftivity is the perfect way to wrap up a Pigeon book study unit. It also makes a fun bulletin board display, to showcase student learning!
WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING
This book study unit can be used as a whole class activity, during small group guided reading time, as individual student work, or as part of a book club. Copy a pack for each student and you're ready to go!
