ELEPHANT & PIGGIE MY FRIEND IS SAD
My Friend is Sad is the second book in a series of Elephant & Piggie books by Mo Willems. The books feature best friends Elephant (also known as Gerald) and Piggie. The book My Friend is Sad is a great read aloud to use when talking to your Kindergarten and First Grade students about friendship and being there when your friend needs you.
Mo Willems' Elephant & Piggie books have been awarded two Theodor Seuss Geisel Medals, five Geisel Honors, and a Golden Kite Award.

Using read alouds is the perfect way to teach reading concepts. Students enjoy a good story while working on engaging learning activities. Listening to books is a central component of literacy development, which contributes to students' literacy success. This unit offers opportunities for students to dig deeper into the story as they practice many literacy skills.
This unit contains literacy learning activities that your students will love. Teachers can use it during guided reading to have students work on learning story elements, making predictions, character traits, setting, and character development, reading comprehension, and many other literacy skills.
In this story, Elephant is feeling sad. This literacy activity has students examining Elephant's character and defining his traits, and comparing and contrasting the main characters, Elephant and Piggie.
Students can make text-to-self connections as they make a list of things that friends can do together.
In My Friend is Sad, Piggie tries many things to try and cheer up his friend, Elephant. Students LOVE to share their own opinions about things too (and they are fun to read :)
Piggie tries to cheer up Elephant with all his favorite things, including robots, cowboys, and clowns. In these worksheets, students use Can-Have-Are-Need graphic organizers to share their schema about these things.
Students will reflect on the story and jot down their personal Story Notes, including any questions they have, things they laughed about, things that surprised them, and their favorite part of the story.
The activities in this unit meet ELA Learning Standards for Common Core, VA SOL, and TEKS. A handy checklist of all the literacy learning standards that are met using this pack is included in the resource!
