In Nate the Great and the Snowy Trail, Nate the Great and his dog, Sludge, were busy making snow detectives and snow dogs, when along came Rosamond. Rosamond had a mystery for Nate the Great to solve, using his detective skills. The present she had for Nate's birthday has gone missing! Nate the Great decides to follow Rosamond's snowy trail to see where she had walked when she still had his birthday present. Nate and his dog Sludge set out to follow Rosamond's footprints and sled tracks in the snow.
Using his detective skills (and fueled up with pancakes), Nate notices exactly where Rosamond lost the present. But it is nowhere to be found! To further complicate things, Nate the Great does not know exactly what he is looking for. But because he knows Rosamond so well, he can deduce that his present is heavy and ugly and strange.
Nate knows that the present fell off of the sled without landing in the snow. Instead of looking down, he had to look UP! And there, high up in the tree, was Nate the Great's birthday present. It was big and heavy and strange and ugly, just as he had predicted.
Without giving it away, Nate is not impressed with his gift. He says "Sometimes, being a detective is not great." He was glad to have only one birthday per year!
